Flipabeatclub and Dibia$e Present Dibi’s Diner: An Invite Only Sound Mixing Workshop Fueling LA’s Underground Hip-Hop Scene

In the heart of Los Angeles’s Arts District, in a secret location only those who are deep in the underground scene know about, Serato, the software company that brings the music to life, isn’t afraid of a noise complaint. The location might be undisclosed, but if you listen closely, you might be able to hear some bass pumping through the walls. Serato’s sound mixing workshops are intimate and electric, bringing together DJs and producers from Long Beach to the West Side to collaborate with industry leaders. On Jan. 20, acclaimed hip-hop producer Dibia$e led the jam session with Flipabeatclub and special guest Magie Hue and samples by LowKey.

Artists packed in close together on couches, stairs and just about anywhere they could find a seat, ready to mix their own tracks using the samples provided. Magie Hue led a workshop showcasing Serato’s first ever controller, SLAB. The MIDI pad controller brings the raw feel, instinct, and speed of beat making back to its elements, with touch pads and velocity sensitive technology. Guests had the chance to try out the brand new product and walked away obsessed with it, while one lucky raffle winner took one home.

Dibia$e led the second half of the workshop, which took place from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Then, the after party, fueled by an open aux, kept the place alive until morning. Born and raised in Watts, Dibia$e has been a leader from LA’s underground scene to the increasingly popular alternative hip-hop movement. He released his debut album Machines Hate Me in 2010, riding on the backs of early 2000s artists while spearheading the rise of alternative hip-hop that would take over LA. As trends shift, he stays true to what he started, but is ever-evolving, developing a signature sound that’s both modern and nostalgic.

Serato hosts regular workshops to build community and fuel connection for artists, producers and DJs who share a desire to keep the underground scene alive. Events are invite only, but registration is open to all. Follow along with Serato and Flipabeatclub to stay in the LOOP.
