Elena Miglino: Celebrity Makeup Artist Reveals Top Beauty Secrets

Redefining Beauty One Brush Stroke at a Time…
Allow us to reintroduce ourselves, our name is Beauty Beat. The Loop Mag team took a mini-hiatus from creating our iconic Beauty Beat sessions, but rest assured, we are back in action. To re-kick things off, we started with a bang. Celebrity makeup artist and Co-Founder of Bad Brides Club, Elena Miglino, has worked with icons like the recent 9-time Grammy-nominated artist, Billie Eilish and actress/singer, Jackie Cruz.
In an industry where beauty often feels predefined, Elena Miglino is reshaping the narrative by embracing individuality and authentic expression. From crafting understated, natural looks for Billie to indulging in full-glam creations with Jackie, Elena’s artistry celebrates the unique vision each client brings to the table. Her journey through the entertainment world has not only highlighted her exceptional talent but also her unwavering belief in the transformative power of makeup. With a career that has whisked her around the globe, filling passports and hearts alike, Elena continues to make her mark on the beauty landscape—one brushstroke at a time.
Elena’s journey into the world of beauty began with a leap into freelance work, predominantly alongside musicians who were shaping the sound—and look—of a new generation. Collaborating with talents like Billie Eilish offered Elena a canvas to explore the many definitions of beauty. “Working with Billie taught me that natural is beautiful, and that’s how she felt best,” Elena reflects. This contrasted vividly with her experiences with clients like Jackie Cruz, who reveled in full-glam moments and the creativity that came with them. “We had so much fun creating looks,” she recalls fondly.
These diverse collaborations underscored a vital lesson: beauty is profoundly personal. In an era when the red carpet was once dominated by a few signature looks, Elena witnessed a transformation within the industry toward celebrating individual expression. “Each artist I worked with had their own vision of what beauty meant to them,” she notes. This realization not only broadened her artistic horizons but also deepened her appreciation for makeup’s power to boost confidence and help clients feel like the best version of themselves. Feeling fortunate to be part of this evolution, Elena embraces her role in empowering others through her craft.
Elena’s artistry has been profoundly shaped by her journeys across the globe, each destination adding a new hue to her creative spectrum. “I feel so blessed that I have been all over the world,” she reflects. Her career has whisked her from touring with musicians to serving as a brand ambassador and beautifying destination weddings—experiences that have kept her passport perpetually filled. “In fact, after I ran out of pages, I changed my last name to my married name and kept that passport as a timestamp to my makeup career,” she reminisces in an interview with Loop.
Every city she visits leaves an indelible mark on her approach to beauty. Paris taught her that “being chic is quiet,” where a simple red lip and bare eye can perfectly complement jeans and a sweater. Italy, forever close to her heart, instilled in her the timeless glamour of Sophia Loren and the essence of la dolce vita. “A Sophia Loren la dolce vita glamour is forever my favorite,” she admits. In Taipei, she received a deep education in skincare, absorbing lessons that shifted her focus to prioritizing skin first when working with clients. “I think I absorbed so much of it and always think about skin first,” Elena emphasizes. These cultural immersions have cemented her philosophy of enhancing natural beauty, ensuring that every face she touches reflects both her global inspirations and a personalized touch.
Elena’s professional approach is as meticulous as it is heartfelt, deeply influenced by artists who champion natural beauty. “I think the artist I admire the most and love everything they do is Mary Phillips,” she shares. “She is so talented, and her makeup is perfect but in the most natural way. The makeup just enhances the beauty of the person; it’s not transformational in a dramatic way.” This affinity for subtle enhancement over dramatic alteration resonates with Elena’s own philosophy. “I love a soft glam,” she admits, aiming to make her clients look like the best versions of themselves.
Her inspirations extend beyond makeup artists to legendary photographers like Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz, and Helmut Newton, especially their work during the iconic ’90s supermodel era. “I could truly spend hours looking at books of their work,” Elena enthuses. “All of these artists are special in their own way, capturing the beauty of their subjects but also telling a story. I also wouldn’t mind living inside a Helmut Newton photo on a beach in St. Tropez.” Their ability to blend storytelling with visual allure has deeply influenced her own approach to makeup artistry.
Behind the scenes, Elena’s dedication shines through her meticulous preparation. “Oh my gosh, cleaning my kit and going through it ten times to make sure I have lash glue, or a fresh mascara, or makeup wipes,” she says with a laugh. “Preparing for a shoot really never ends because even when you get there, there could be a moment where the producer or the photographer says, ‘I think I want green glitter,’ and you better hope that you have that in your kit—or you can be really quick on Uber delivery!” Her massive, well-stocked kit is a testament to her commitment to being ready for anything, ensuring that she can adapt on the fly to any creative request.
Balancing her career and personal life is a dance Elena continues to refine. “I am an absolute workaholic; on the bright side, I absolutely love my job,” she confesses. The demands of being a makeup artist often mean saying no to weekends, birthdays, and long-planned gatherings. “If you like making plans in advance and keeping them, you need to find a new job, because this ain’t it,” she remarks candidly. Yet, she firmly believes in the mantra of “work hard, play even harder.” Raised by a hardworking family who valued quality time, she ensures that despite her busy schedule, she makes space for what fulfills her most—spending time with family and friends. “I might work every day in June, but you better believe I am spending most of July in Italy or the whole month of December on the West Coast or Florida visiting my husband’s family or taking a once-a-year girls’ trip,” she shares. For Elena, these experiences are the self-care that rejuvenates her spirit amid a bustling career.
Elena Miglino’s journey is a vivid illustration of how passion and authenticity can redefine an industry. “Being nice, being cool, being calm” isn’t just her mantra—it’s the foundation of her success. Elena’s ability to make each client feel confident and valued has solidified her reputation as more than just a makeup artist; she’s a trusted ally and confidante. As she looks to the future, continually evolving and perfecting her craft, Elena remains grateful for a career that not only fulfills her but also allows her to touch the lives of others positively. In a world where trends come and go, her commitment to individuality and genuine connection sets her apart, reminding us all that true beauty radiates from within.
