Vibrant Vino: Orange Glou Wine Fair Comes To LA

Orange is the white…

When it comes to wine, most people think of red and white varieties. However, orange wine has been skyrocketing in popularity lately as a refreshing alternative.

Now this spring, Angelenos will have the opportunity to better explore this citrus-colored sipper at the upcoming Orange Glou Fair.

Dedicated exclusively to orange wines, the fair—created by Sommelier and wine educator Doreen Winkler—will welcome 20 superstar wineries from all around the world, with over 80 orange wines for guests to taste, focused on domestic producers and Georgian producers. (Fun fact: orange wine was first produced 8,000 years ago in the Republic of Georgia).

So what exactly is orange wine? First of all, no, it is not made from oranges.

Otherwise known as skin-contact wine, orange wine made from white wine grapes where the grape skins are not removed, as in typical white wine production, and stay in contact with the juice for days or even months. This contrasts with conventional white wine production, which involves crushing the grapes and quickly moving the juice off the skins into the fermentation vessel. The skins contain color pigment, phenols and tannins that would normally be considered undesirable for white wines, while for red wines skin contact is a vital part of the winemaking process that gives red wine its color, flavor and texture.

In other words, orange wine is a type of white wine that’s produced similarly to red wine, by allowing grape seeds and skin to stay in contact with grape juice for a period of time. This process creates a light to deep orange hue, depending on the way the wine is produced.

Following two successful Orange Glou Fairs in New York City, the Los Angeles open-air event will be held Saturday, April 27 at the beTRUE Los Angeles creative space in West Hollywood. Attendees can purchase tickets for the early session from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or the late session from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m..
