Soulection’s 15th LA Anniversary Came Full Circle With Framework, Kaytranada & More
Inside Soulection’s 15th anniversary LA concert with Kaytranada, Joe Kay, Sango, ESTA and more, presented by Framework.
There are concerts you go to for the headliner, then there are concerts where the headliner makes you realize exactly what the night is about. For Soulection’s 15th anniversary LA performance, that artist was Kaytranada. Being an avid listener, I was already sold, but seeing him headline Framework Presents: The Soulection Experience at Reframe Studios Outdoors made the pairing feel like what Soulection’s founder Joe Kay called, “long overdue, but right on time.”
When you look at where this collective started, what it has become and the artists it has helped bring into the spotlight, this felt like a true celebration of everything the platform has spent the last 15 years building.
Soulection was celebrating its 15th birthday back in the city where it all started, with a lineup that felt perfectly curated for the people who actually know (and love) the Soulection universe: Joe Kay, Sango, ESTA, DJ Miss Milan, Ayanna Heaven, Soulection & Friends and, of course, Kaytranada.
I knew I was in for quite the experience the moment I pulled up to Reframe Studios Outdoors.
The stylish crowd and open-air event space felt right at home with the energy Framework has been building here all summer, bringing stacked lineups and dance-worthy shows to LA every weekend through its Summer Series and into the fall. With Framework’s calendar running through February, there’s plenty more to come.
Admittedly, I was especially excited for this one. Kaytranada is one of my favorite artists, so getting to see him headline an anniversary celebration for a collective so closely connected to his early sound felt like the kind of once-in-a-lifetime experience I’d be telling my children about someday. The Grammy-winning DJ and producer has built a career around the kind of soulful, genre-blurring music that makes it practically impossible to stand still, shifting between R&B, funk, house and hip-hop.
Before Kaytranada became the name everyone knows now, his sound was already closely tied to the world Soulection was building. The platform’s early radio era was built around discovering producers and artists creating genre-mixing sounds, and Kaytranada became one of the artists associated with that movement. His name has remained a recurring part of Soulection’s history, appearing across more than 140 episodes of Soulection Radio.
With Kaytranada making his first official appearance on a Soulection lineup for its 15th anniversary, Kay called this collaboration “long overdue, but right on time.”
It's special. Just having Kaytranada, it's been long overdue but right on time, and to me that's all that matters…This is the first time he's been on one of our lineups.
That history didn’t need to take over the night, but you could definitely feel it without anyone having to explain it.
The music did most of the talking, though.
I’ve been to plenty of events where the headliner is the obvious reason everyone bought a ticket. This felt different, though. Every artist on the lineup had a reason to be there, each bringing their own take on the sound Soulection has spent 15 years building. You could move through the day depending on which corner of that sound you wanted, with enough variety to make the experience feel like a true night out rather than just another festival.
From Sango and ESTA to DJ Miss Milan and Ayanna Heaven, the lineup took the Soulection sound in different directions. Each artist brought their own take on the soulful, EDM and R&B adjacent territory that makes a Soulection event feel distinct.
The crowd knew exactly what they were there for, surprises and all.
Jordan Ward, Joyce Wrice, Samara Cyn, BLXST, Lucky Daye, Alex Isley and SiR were some the surprise guests who came out to celebrate. These weren’t just random cameos added to make an anniversary party sound bigger, they were artists from the same ecosystem showing up for a collective that helped shape their musical culture.
That, to me, was one of the best parts of the night. Soulection has always had a very specific kind of audience: people who care about the song before they care about the name attached to it, and people who don’t just listen to the music but actually feel it. You could feel that in the crowd. People weren’t waiting around to be impressed, or just pretending to have fun. They were dancing, locked into the music and fully immersed in the experience, and I was right there with them.
15 years is a long time for any music platform, especially one built around discovering what’s next. Watching an artist who was once part of that emerging sound headline the celebration made the milestone feel that much more special. Maybe that’s the real flex: after all this time, this collective still feels like a world you want to be part of. If this anniversary was any indication, Soulection has no plans of slowing down.
