Drinks ‘n drag anyone?
Although it can be difficult to find LGBTQ+ based venues in most parts of the country, this is definitely not the case for Los Angeles. Historically speaking, West Hollywood is notorious for having one of the best queer scenes in the US. From bars to restaurants to clubs, WEHO has continuously provided queer folks with several different exciting events and venues to attend comfortably. Although there are so many great spots to check out in WEHO, I have compiled a list of a few favorites that have been especially fun for my friends and I over the years. The Abbey WEHO
The Abbey, located in West Hollywood, has become one of the most famous gay bars and restaurants in the country. This restaurant first opened in 1991 and has since provided queer people with a safe space to exist authentically. The Abbey has become one of my favorite gay bars in LA simply based off the weekly events. These events include drag performances, live DJ’s, bottle service, and more. Given how famous The Abbey has become, you can expect to see some of the biggest names in drag both performing and attending many of these themed nights. Although this bar has become especially well-known for their events, the Abbey is also famous for their extensive and delicious menu options. With a whole section dedicated to cocktails, my friends and I were both overwhelmed and delighted by the selection of tasty drinks. Overall, The Abbey remains to be a West Hollywood gem for the queer community.
Rocco’s WEHO
One of my favorite queer events in the Los Angeles area takes place during brunch at Rocco’s. Although Rocco’s is all – a restaurant, bar, and nightclub – their drag themed brunch events have made this spot one of the most popular queer venues in West Hollywood. Almost every day of the week, Rocco’s hosts a brunch with live performances and entertainment from the ‘Roccette’ drag queens. Each day has a different theme, allowing guests to dress-up and engage with the Roccette’s during their meal. Although many of these drag themed events take place during brunch, Rocco’s does also host drag nights on both Thursdays and Fridays. Thursday nights consist of ‘Drinks ‘n Drag,’ where guests can drink and party with their favorite queens; whilst Friday nights are reserved for the ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’ viewing parties. Booking a table at almost any of these drag events can guarantee you and your friends drinks, food and the performance of a lifetime.
Hamburger Mary’s
Hamburger Mary’s, also located in West Hollywood, is another iconic queer restaurant and bar. This spot has become especially famous for their drag queen bingo events that occur multiple times a week. Not only can you win prizes at these bingo events, they also help raise money for charities and organizations to aid queer folks. Hamburger Mary’s hosts other events such as karaoke nights, ‘Thirsty Thursday’ drinking nights, and many more. This restaurant has also become famous for their delicious food and drinks – specifically their burgers and margaritas. These margaritas are served in what is known as ‘Mary’s Goblet’ – which essentially is a glass big enough for four people to share and feel tipsy off. The menu options, events and overall atmosphere make Hamburger Mary’s one of the best queer venues LA has to offer.
