You know what they say, “Time flies when you’re having rum!” and there’s no better time to toast to friends with a tropical cocktail like National Rum Day on August 16.  In honor of the spirited day, we tapped some of the most iconic and dreamy establishments all over the world to share the inside scoop on their must-try rum cocktails that you can make in the comfort of your own home.

Whether it’s a classic Dark N’ Stormy or fun twist on a Mai Tai, these concoctions are sure to set the tone of the tropics this Rum Day, no matter where you are mixing them up.

Tipsy Turtle at Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa  Fort Lauderdale, FL

Daydreaming of sparkling shores, sunshine, and salty breezes? Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Malibu Rum
  • 0.5 oz Blue Curacao
  • 1 oz Sour Mix
  • 2 oz Pineapple Juice
  • Garnish with Orange Slice, Cherry and Coconut Flakes

Method: Combine ingredients into a shaker tin. Shake and roll into a highball glass. Finish with an orange slice and cherry garnish with a coconut flake sprinkle on top.

Piña Quemada at The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas – Dallas, TX

Ingredients:

  • 1500 ml Coconut Washed Bacardi Anejo 4 Year Rum
  • 500 ml Ilegal Mezcal Joven
  • 500 ml Lime Juice
  • 500 ml Coconut Cream
  • 1000 ml Burnt Pineapple Juice
  • 3 dashes of Angostura Bitters

Method: Combine ingredients. Shake and Strain into a Collins glass. Garnish with pineapple frond.

Aruba Ariba and Passionfruit Mojito at Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort – Oranjestad, Aruba

Aruba Ariba

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Rum
  • 1 oz Coecoei or Fruit Liquor
  • 0.5 oz Crème de Banana Liqueur
  • 0.5 oz Lime Juice
  • 2 oz Orange Juice
  • 2 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 2 oz Grenadine Syrup

Method: Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes. Add vodka, rum, Coecoei or fruit liquor, banana liqueur, orange juice, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, grenadine syrup, and lime juice to the shaker. Shake the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to combine the ingredients and chill the cocktail. Strain the mixture into a hurricane glass or any other tall glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry, if desired.

Passionfruit Mojito

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 Fresh Mint Leaves
  • 1.5 oz Lime Juice
  • 1 oz Simple Syrup
  • 2 oz Passionfruit Puree
  • 2 oz White Rum
  • 2 oz Club Soda

Method: In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh mint leaves and lime juice. Gently muddle the mint leaves using a muddler or the back of a spoon. This helps release the mint’s flavors. Add the simple syrup and passion fruit puree to the shaker. Fill the shaker with crushed ice. Pour in the white rum. Shake the mixture vigorously for about 10-15 seconds to combine the ingredients and chill the cocktail. Fill a highball glass or a similar glass with crushed ice. Strain the cocktail mixture into the glass, using a strainer or the shaker’s built-in strainer. Top the glass with club soda. Give the cocktail a gentle stir to mix in the club soda. Garnish with a lime wedge and a mint sprig, if desired.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz Pina Colada mix (make your own by combining equal parts cream of coconut and pineapple juice)
  • 2 oz Cruzan Rum
  • 0.5 oz Lime Juice
  • Splash of Pineapple Juice
  • 0.5 oz Blue Curacao (do not add to mixture)

Method: Place all ingredients in a blender with ice. (Tip: add a splash of pineapple juice to help blend more smoothly) and blend. Pour 0.5 oz blue curacao in the bottom of the glass, add your blended mix. Garnish with ocean-themed candies.

  • 1 oz Malibu Rum 
  • 1 oz Captain Morgan

Method: Add the Malibu and Captain Morgan Rum into a glass and top with pineapple juice and a spritz of blue curacao. Finish off this drink with a dash of sprite and garnish with mixed fruit.

  • 10-12 Lemon Verbena Leaves
  •  2 Lemon Slices
  •  1 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1.5 oz of White Rum
  • A splash Club Soda 
  • Garnish with a slice of Lemon and Verbena Leaves

Method: Muddle verbena leaves, lemon slices, and 1 ounce of Lemon Juice in a shaker. Add white rum and ice and shake vigorously. Pour into a tumbler and top with club soda.

Dark N’ Stormy at The Black Pearl — Newport, Rhode Island

At the famous, historic Windsor Hotel, we’ve put a unique twist on the renowned Hurricane drink and crafted our very own Georgia version that celebrates not only National Rum Day, but also the long history of past presidents and notable guests that have frequented the five-story Victorian hotel since 1892 since it houses the “best bar in town.”

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. Malibu 
  • 1 oz. Captain Morgan
  • 1 oz. Passionfruit Juice 
  • 1 oz. Orange Juice 
  • 0.5 oz Simple Syrup 
  • 0.25 oz. Lemon Juice 
  • 0.25 oz. Lime Juice 
  • Splash of Grenadine 

Method: Add the light and dark rums, passionfruit, lime, lemon and orange juices, simple syrup, and grenadine into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a large Hurricane glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange, lemon, and lime slice.

Blue Suede Shoes at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino  Las Vegas, NV

Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, known as the home-away-from-home for The King of Rock–where he performed a platinum-record-breaking number of sold out shows at the International Theater (which still stands and sings to this day with legendary acts)–is raising a glass and inviting fans to get “All Shook Up” in celebration of National Rum Day with its Elvis-inspired cocktail, named after the ever-iconic song “Blue Suede Shoes.” While Blue Suede Shoes is enjoyed at the Resort’s International Bar as part of an all-new Elvis cocktail menu, it can also be recreated wherever your own dancing shoes may lead you.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Avua Prata Cachaa
  • 0.75 oz Blue Curacao
  • 0.75 oz Giffard Nuix De Coco Syrup
  • 0.75 oz Lime Juice
  • 1.5 oz Coconut Water
  • 1.5 oz Pineapple Juice

Method: Combine all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake until chilled and pour into a stemless wine glass. Garnish with dehydrated pineapple, orchid, edible glitter, and desiccated coconut to serve.

 

Rhody Rumcation at White Dog Distillery — Pawtucket, RI

Sip your way back to the past with White Dog Distillery’s Rhody Rumcation. Located in the historic mills of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, this “pack” of brewers dedication to distilled spirits and cocktails goes unmatched throughout the region. Blended with their white dog spiced house rum and ginger cardamom lime syrup, with some freshly squeezed tangerines, this candy garnished cocktail offers a blast to the past.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz White Dog Distilling Spiced Rum (Made in Rhode Island)
  • 2 oz Fresh Squeezed Tangerine Juice (typically found in the fresh juice section of your grocer)
  • 1 Lime wedge (⅙ of a lime)
  • 0.5 oz Bootblack Brand Ginger Cardamom Lime Syrup (Made in Rhode Island)
  • Yacht Club Ginger Ale (Made in Rhode Island)
  • 1 Candied Ginger Garnish

Method: Fill a tall glass with ice, add rum, fruit juice and syrup. Empty the ingredients into a shaker. Squeeze the juice from the lime wedge into the cocktail shaker, discard the lime wedge. Shake the ingredients to mix. Add all the contents back to the glass, fill the remainder of the glass with ginger ale. Pour everything back into the shaker and then pour back into your glass.  (WHY? because everything will be well blended and good ‘til the last drop!). Garnish with a Candied Ginger.

Dark Horse at Marquesa Hotel – Key West, FL

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Papa’s Pilar Dark Rum
  • 0.5 oz Chery Herring Liqueur 
  • 0.5 oz Antica Sweet Vermouth
  • 0.5 oz B&B
  • 3 Cherries (Garnish)

Method: Combine ingredients, add ice and shake well. Strain into a martini glass, garnish with cherries on a cocktail pick. 

Rum Punch in Belize – Belize Tourism Board

The national cocktail of Belize, this local delicacy appears on almost every drink menu in the country. Few cocktails have as many different recipes as the Rum Punch—and it’s one of the best drinks to take liberties with, mixing and matching fruits and dialing up (or down) the amount of rum included. Rum Punch is a quick and easy cocktail to make, and only requires a couple simple ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of White Rum 
  • 1 cup of Coconut Rum
  • 2 1/2 cups of Fresh Orange Juice and Pineapple Juice
  • 1/2 cup of Fresh Lime Juice
  • 3 tablespoons of Grenadine (or enough to make the punch into a pretty pink color.

Method: Simply stir all the ingredients together in a pitcher or punch bowl, and chill before serving. Use short rocks glasses full of ice, and garnish your Rum Punch with slices of orange and pineapple. This recipe yields 8-10 servings.

Niagara Splash at Niagara Falls State Park – Niagara Falls, NY

For a refreshing cocktail that’s reminiscent of its home at Niagara Falls State Park, try the Niagara Splash. The Niagara Splash combines the flavors of Coconut (with both coconut rum and coconut water), lime, and Blue Curacao to create this color cocktail that will transport you to the waterfalls for which it is named. 

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Coconut Rum
  • 2 oz Coconut Water
  • 1 oz Simple Syrup
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • 0.25 oz Blue Curacao
  • 1 oz Club Soda (Top with)
  • Dehydrated Lime Wheel, Mint Sprig (Garnish)

Method: Combine all ingredients (EXCEPT Club Soda) in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain over fresh ice in a Hurricane glass. Top with Club Soda and garnish with lime and mint.

Island Time at The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa – Denver, CO

On National Rum Day–and every day–the Island Time cocktail served in this downtown Denver landmark is sure to transport the sipper to the tropics. The rum punch is on the menu at Ship Tavern, one of six on-site food and beverage venues nestled within The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa, the Mile High City’s most iconic historic hotel. A vintage pub with a lively atmosphere, Ship Tavern is the hotel’s oldest restaurant – opened in 1934 after the repeal of prohibition – with décor that includes a complete mast and crow’s nest, an old ship’s clock, Jamaican rum barrels, and a collection of sailing ship models former hotel owner, Boettcher, acquired on a visit to Cape Cod. Bottoms up!

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Santa Teresa 1796 Rum
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice
  • Sprinkle of Cinnamon

Method: Combine all liquid ingredients into a shaker. Shake and Strain into a Collins glass over fresh ice. Sprinkle cinnamon on top and garnish with a lime wheel. 

Mai Kind of Night at The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio – San Antonio, TX 

Indulge in the tropical flavors of the Mai Kind of Night cocktail at Zocca, the on-site bar at The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio, in celebration of National Rum Day. This delightful concoction combines of Malibu rum with the refreshing notes of orange juice and pineapple juice, perfectly balanced with a splash of grenadine. Illumination at Space 220 – Orlando, FL

Blast off into space with this delicious rum cocktail from out of this world! Served at Space 220–a futuristic restaurant set in outer space located at Disney’s EPCOT–the Illumination cocktail is a fun fruity rum celebration. This over-the-top creation is made with Bacardi Superior Rum and Malibu Coconut Rum and combines four fruit flavors from Twisted Alchemy, including Passionfruit, Blood Orange, Pineapple and Lime Sour. But the ingredient that really sets this drink apart is the Passion Fruit Boba creating a wild burst-in-your-mouth experience. 

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Bacardi Superior Rum
  • 1 oz Malibu Coconut Rum
  • 1 oz Twisted Alchemy Passionfruit 
  • 1 oz Twisted Alchemy Blood Orange Juice 
  • 1 oz Twisted Alchemy Pineapple Juice 
  • 0.5 oz Twisted Alchemy Lime Sour 
  • Mint, Passion Fruit Boba (Garnish)

Method: Combine all liquid ingredients into a small shaker tin. Add ice and shake 20 times. Double strain into a Collins glass using a Hawthorne strainer. Garnish with mint and passion fruit boba.  

Tipsy Turtle at Wild Dunes Resort – Isle of Palms, SC

  • 1.5 oz Rumhaven Coconut Rum
  • 0.25 oz Blue Curacao
  • 4 oz Pineapple Juice
  • Orange Slice
  • Maraschino Cherry

Method: Combine coconut rum with blue curacao and pineapple juice. Shake or pour in and out of a mixing glass with ice. Build in Rocks glass, or a glass of your preference with ice and garnish with a cherry, half-moon orange slice and toy turtle.

Myers’s Mai Tai at George’s of Galilee — South County, Rhode Island

  • 0.5 oz Orange Curacao

Method: Add the Myers platinum rum as the foundation. Send a splash of Orange Curacao and Orgeat Syrup. Leisurely pour the pineapple and OJ quickly after. A squeeze of lime juice and top it off with a floater of Myers dark rum. Last but not least, garnish with an orange and maraschino cherry.

Lady in the Tropics at Lighthouse Pointe at Grand Lucayan – Grand Bahama Island

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Mango Rum
  • 1 oz Coconut Rum
  • 2 oz Gold Rum
  • 3 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 1.5 oz Lemonade
  • Splash of Grenadine (so it goes to the bottom and creates the red color)

Method: Combine all ingredients, except grenadine, in mixing glass with ice. Shake well then pour into tall cocktail glass. Add a small splash of grenadine. Raise glass and toast.

Method: Mix the Toasted Coconut and Bacardi Rum and shake well. Add a splash of lime juice, and 3 oz. of pineapple juice. Pour over ice and top with ginger ale and a lime wedge.

  • 1.5 oz Bacardi Dragonberry Rum
  • 0.75 oz Pomegranate Juice

Method: Muddle 4 leaves of fresh mint with 4 lime juice, add Bacardi dragonberry rum and pomegranate juice. Shake and strain over ice in a traditional highball glass. Garnish with remaining fresh limes & mint.

 

Isola Breeze at The Kimpton Brice – Savannah, GA

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Santa Teresa 1796 Rum
  • 0.5 oz Giffard Banane du Bresil
  • 0.5 oz Cinnamon Syrup
  • 0.5 z Pineapple Juice 
  • 0.75 oz Lime Juice 
  • 1 Dash Angostura Bitters

Method: Add all ingredients to mixing tin with ice. Shake to medium dilution. Double strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish and serve.

Rum Cocktail At Handle – Park City, UT

In 2021, Handle’s Mixologist Reagan Chung won the annual Park City Savor the Cocktail Contest with his Handle Rum Cocktail recipe. Reagan drew inspiration for the cocktail from his mom’s cooking and her use of the Southeast Asian fruit pandan. “Pandan is herbaceous with notes of coconut and vanilla,” he says, which was accentuated by “adding some tropical funk with a blend of rums” and a bit of lime. The result is subtly tart, sublimely tropical, and delightfully sneaky in upping the ABV with two classic rums

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Plantation 3 Star Rum
  • 0.5 oz Wray and Nephew Jamaican Rum
  • 0.25 oz Licor 43
  • 0.75 oz Pandan syrup
  • 0.5 oz Coconut water
  • 0.75 oz Fresh lime juice 
  • Edible flowers (Garnish)

Method: Combine ingredients, add ice and shake well. Strain over crushed ice in a rocks glass, garnish with colorful edible flowers and enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Bacardi Reserva Ocho
  • 0.5 oz Amaro Nonino
  • 0.5 oz Cinnamon Syrup
  • 4 dashes Aztec Bitters

Method: Combine ingredients in a shaker tin over ice and stir for 20-30 seconds. Strain over a large ice cube, which we stamp with our restaurant’s logo (Eleve). Express an orange peel with a spark of fire to finish the cocktail.

 

The Fog of River North at Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago – Chicago, IL

Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago has quickly become one of the best luxury hotels in Chicago and downtown’s most desirable address, offering awe-inspiring views of Chicago’s prized architecture, the winding Chicago River and Lake Michigan. The Fog of River North, a cocktail offered at Terrace 16 rooftop restaurant, captures the spirit of the city and is named after the advection fog that is most prevalent over Lake Michigan. When the water is cool and a warm, moist air mass meets the lake forming a thick fog that drifts over the Windy City. 

Ingredients:

  • 0.5 oz Kasama Rum
  • 0.5 oz Aperol
  • 0.5 oz Lemon Juice
  • 0.5 oz Simple Syrup
  • Splash of Prosecco

Method: Using a rocks glass add in a large square piece of crafted ice, add equal parts of each ingredient over the ice and stir all ingredients to make this refreshing summer cocktail.

In the spirit of National Rum Day, Bungalows  shared the famed recipe of their specialty, signature cocktail the Coco Tiki Tai, offered at each F&B outlet and at check-in, both of which can easily be made and enjoyed at home (while dreaming of being on the beach or by the pool, in the Florida Keys).

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Coconut Rum 
  • 1 oz Amaretto
  • 4 oz Orange Juice
  • 2 oz Pineapple Juice

Method: Combine splashes of coconut rum and amaretto, then give a leisurely stir twice. Add orange juice and pineapple juice and mix well or pour both simultaneously for a perfect blend. Grab a partner and cheers before sipping.

Ilikea’s Mai Tai at Trump International Hotel Waikiki – Honolulu, HI

Paradise is calling with Trump International Hotel Waikiki’s rum-tastic cocktail Ilikea’s Mai Tai. Perfect for lounging by the pool, this tropical drink brings notes of caramelized pineapple and lime-orange all season long. 

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Bacardi 8
  • 0.5 oz DiSaronno Amaretto
  • 0.25 oz Domain de Canton Ginger Liqueur
  • 0.75 oz homemade Kaffir Lime-Orange Syrup
  • 0.5 oz Perfect Puree Caramelized, Pineapple Concentrate
  • 0.75 oz fresh Lime Juice

Method: Shake and pour into highball glass, layer with 1.2oz Bacardi Black and top with Pineapple Bacardi Gold Sorbet Garnish, Pineapple Wedge and Orchid. Steep 20 kaffir leaves in water, simmer on very low heat for ten minutes. After the water is fragrant, make simple syrup with equal parts kaffir water and sugar.  Simmer syrup with peel from one orange for about 20 minutes, then cool.
