Sam Blacky Summertime Playlist
- Story by Shirley Ju
Sam Blacky is your favorite female DJ… period! Born and raised in San Diego, Sam calls herself the “wild child” — as evidenced for her love for both music and partying.
Sam Blacky is one of PCN’s favorite female DJs. Heavily involved in the festival and dance music scene, it was at age 16 when she discovered house music in the form of the first Calvin Harris album.
In fact, when asked the moment she fell in love with music, she simply replies, “the day I was born.” Sam’s fondest memories include attending Electric Carnival Daisy (EDC) Festival and turning up with friends and drugs — creating priceless memories with the help of live music. At the age of 18, she made the move to Australia and lived there for 6 years while she obtained her degree. It was then she entered the world of marketing and music management.

Eventually, her very good friend Sammy Prosser (a club owner) had paid for DJ lessons. After hours of lessons, she’d go to Guitar Center as often as she could to practice on the equipment there. After landing a couple club gigs, she created a reel of her work which went hand in hand with her endeavors booking artists and interviewing them backstage.
Fast forward to 2019, deejaying is her biggest passion to date. She explains, “It releases my stress and energy. It takes me to such a high place — something better than drugs.” Sam delves further into her love of nightlife in her episode of 2 A.M Chronicles.
Most recently, she’s found her style aligning with a new vibe with tech-house, signing to the Ayita imprint (home to Chris Lake, Fisher, noizu, etc.). While modeling was on the back-burner, she knew her love her music trumped any other career option. From starting with clubs gigs to festivals in Bali (Bestival) to opening for Duke Dumont at Light in Las Vegas, Sam proves dreams really do come true.
In terms of which songs she chooses to play in a set, she answers, “I never pre-chose my songs. I go into it with a rough idea and wing it every time!”
With Summer 2019 upon us, Sam looks forward to more traveling, tanning, and of course, partying. Her summertimes favorites include anything with Rüfüs Du Sol, an artist that immediately ignites nostalgia upon hearing. While these emotions tied to music are treasured, she actually feels she has new anthems every single day.
So what is her ideal summer day? “Going out on a boat with friends and hopping from spot to spot drinking Rosé and laying in the sun.”
While she appreciates the sunny Los Angeles weather, which she calls “amazing,” she also brings up the benefits in the rain. She explains, “This year, it’s rained every damn day. I guess it’s kept me in the studio more! “
As far as her summertime playlist, they vary. But she also lets us in on some of her staples: “WORD” by Walker & Royce, “Stay With Me” by Chris Lake, “Ready To Love” by A-Trak & The Magician.
As far as the other seasons, she states, “It’s all the same. Good music, good people, and good parties!
