Brad Mondo Convinced Me to Hide Shot Bottles in My Hair

5 years ago, I would’ve called it poor taste. But Brad Mondo made it sexy.

It was 10 pm on a Friday night and my debit card declined at 7/11. I wanted to die. Instead, I did the walk of shame back to the fridge and put my hangover-Gatorades back where they came from. To make matters worse, I had my Gucci purse on my shoulder and I had to put my useless plastic card back in it right in front of the line of people behind me. I hurried out and drove back home, mortified, and about to call off the night because I couldn’t even afford to get a little tipsy when drinks at the club cost, like, $20. Then, I remembered a hack I had seen on TikTok. I asked my roommate if she still had the tiny bottles of Jack that she’d used for her birthday, and some hairspray. She looked at me a little funny, but knowing me, she didn’t question it. Instead, she met me in the bathroom with a shot bottle in each hand.

Who would suspect somebody hiding alcohol in their hair, anyway?

If you don’t know who Brad Mondo is, he’s the viral hairdresser whose YouTube haircut tutorials kept me busy through the pandemic. I’m talking bad DIY haircuts for me and all my roommates. Not Brad’s fault— I just got way too confident with some kitchen scissors.

Recently, he started a new series on TikTok called “hiding alcohol in hair.” Genius. I won’t lie, my roommate won’t let me anywhere near her with a pair of scissors, but I knew this was a hair tutorial she might let me try. Especially if it saves us both 20 bucks.

The first hairstyle I attempted on her was a classic claw clip up-do. This one is especially easy because the little bottle of alcohol gives you something to wrap your hair around. I parted her hair down the middle, pulled it back on each side, and twisted it the way I would normally style it with a claw clip. Then I tucked one of the bottles of Jack into the twisted hair, and wrapped the hair around the bottle until it was completely covered. We secured it with a big claw clip and some bobby pins and honestly, she could’ve fooled me. Who would suspect somebody hiding alcohol in their hair, anyway?

The plastic bottle had come loose. It fell to the floor and I watched in horror as it started rolling down the sidewalk.

After the first style went so well, my roommate got a little confident and decided to try something a little more complicated on me. It would be suspicious if we both had the exact same hair style, right? She started by parting my hair and brushing it into a half-up-half-down style. She secured it with a regular hair tie, and tucked the top of the bottle into the elastic band. Then, she wrapped a section of my hair around the hair tie to hide the bottle cap and to give it a seamless look. We had to tease my hair a few times to make sure the bottle was completely hidden, but it was totally convincing in the end. We finished off with some hair spray and headed out for the night.

Was it comfortable? No. Practical? Also no. But did we have fun doing it? Absolutely. We were standing in line outside the club trying our best not to laugh but failing miserably, when a security guard came up to us to check our IDs. I dug through my purse to grab mine and, without thinking, I flipped my hair out of my face. I realized too late that the plastic bottle had come loose. It fell to the floor and I watched in horror as it started rolling down the sidewalk. The guard didn’t even have time to look at me. My friend and I were already gone. I ran after the shot bottle, stuffed it in my Gucci purse and we spent the rest of the night doing karaoke at our apartment and scrolling through Hinge.

Looking back, I have no regrets. I’ll definitely give the hair hack another try at a different club on the opposite side of town.
