The Ultimate New Yorker’s Guide to Los Angeles

From the Big Apple to the City of Angels…

Welcome to Los Angeles, where the streets have no numbers, brunch starts at noon, and time is a social construct. For New Yorkers, stepping into the City of Angels can feel like landing on another planet—one where people unironically wear yoga pants to meetings and nobody’s in a rush, ever. But fear not, fellow Gothamites! LA isn’t just a sunny sprawl of traffic and avocado toast (though both are very prevalent). It’s a vibrant playground of creativity, culture, and endless opportunities to see and be seen. You just need the right guide to hack the LA code—and luckily for you, here it is.

While Los Angeles is filled with beautiful places like Manhattan Beach, Malibu and Marina Del Rey, West Hollywood is where you want to be if you want to experience all the places you see flooding your FYP and Instagram feed. It’s a place where you can spot Fai Khandra at In-N-Out, Paris Hilton at the EDITION hotel and Bomanizer at Sprouts. It’s also where the Hollywood sign beams over the town, popular spots are on every corner and the best shopping areas like Rodeo Drive and The Grove are just down the street.

As someone who braves the nearly seven hour flight from NYC to LA frequently, I’ve managed to rack up some serious LA-knowledge. To best assist my fellow New Yorkers, I decided to put together a list of my favorite spots. From hotels, to restaurants to clubs, I have you covered. While nothing can truly compare to the bright lights of New York City, our sister city deserves a fighting chance. Read below to find out all the best places to eat, sleep, get wasted, and have fun!

Where TF Should I Stay?

When you first land at LAX, grab your luggage and be sure to order an Uber Black, which will pick you up right outside the luggage terminal. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck on a shuttle that takes you to the gen-pop Uber pick up area. Who wants that after a long flight?! It’s worth the extra cash, trust me. Next, head to one of my favorite hotels – The Hollywood Roosevelt, Godfrey Hotel Hollywood, Mondrian Los Angeles or, if you’re feeling really boujee, the West Hollywood EDITION. All of these are in prime West Hollywood and are seeped with cool vibes and history. Think of The Hollywood Roosevelt as The Plaza Hotel and Godfrey Hotel Hollywood as PUBLIC Hotel in the Lower East Side.  The Mondrian as the St. Regis on 5th ave and the EDITION as the gorgeous Bacarrat hotel. Find the right accommodation for you below!

THE HOLLYWOOD ROOSEVELT

When you arrive at the Hollywood Roosevelt, you’ll be greeted by friendly valets who insist on taking your bags up to your room for you (period). Not only is this hotel where the iconic Marilyn Monroe on the diving board photo was taken, it’s also been around since the 1920s, making it one of the most historic hotels in Los Angeles. After you get unpacked and settled, I assume you’ll be starving. Conveniently, the hotel is home to some of the best restaurants in WeHo. There’s a mouth-watering burger joint called 25 Degrees if you need something to sink your teeth into. If you’re feeling boujee, you can check out the Shirley Brasserie for a nice meal. If you’re in a silly goofy mood, there’s a prohibition era-style cocktail lounge with a vintage two-lane bowling alley and custom-made wooden board games called The Spare Room. If you arrive in the morning and need breakfast, check out the Rosy Café; it’s giving Cha Cha Matcha vibes, but poolside. Speaking of pools, there’s also a heated pool for you to catch some rays. And if you’re one of those psychos like me who enjoy working out during trips, there’s a gym with Netflix on the treadmills. Perfect for watching Gossip Girl while you work off your calories!

GODFREY HOTEL HOLLYWOOD

If you stay at the Godfrey Hotel Hollywood, you can expect a handsome group of men checking you in. Talk about a warm welcome! This glamorous hotel is perfect for anyone who enjoys the finer things in life. The designs of the rooms are modern, sleek and the lighting in the bathroom is *chef’s kiss* and perfect for selfies. Not to mention the rooftop pool and bar, which allow you to unpack your bags and immediately head upstairs for a stunning WeHo view and photo opps to boot. I high-tailed up there and tried the Spicy Pepperoni Pizza and the Cheeseburger from i I o,  one of the hotel’s two in-house restaurants. The food was great, the drinks were strong and the views were breathtaking. The hotel lobby is always buzzing and boasts their other in-house restaurant, About Last Knife (cute name, right?!). Godfrey Hotel Hollywood hosts Jazz Nights every Saturday from 6PM-9PM, happy hours Sunday through Thursday from 3PM-6PM, and has an endless supply of new, fun events every week. If you rented a car, you can either valet for $50/night or park in the street, with conveniently located parking spots around the property. All in all, this hotel is fabulous and received the Julianne stamp of approval – whatever that’s worth!

MONDRIAN LOS ANGELES

The Mondrian Los Angeles is one of the most beautiful hotels, like, EVER. Originally designed by Philippe Starck, the hotel underwent a whopping $19M redesign (cha-ching!) featuring jaw-dropping rooms, stunning views of Los Angeles and definitely gives guests that luxury feeling. Located on the iconic Sunset Strip, it’s home to hotspots, Casa Madera and Skybar, which I will chat about later, and is in the perfect location for any New Yorker. If you desire a true celebrity-vibe stay in Los Angeles, the Mondrian is the place for you!

WEST HOLLYWOOD EDITION

Not only is the West Hollywood EDITION a celebrity hot spot, it also has tons of beautiful on-site venues like the infamous Sunset club in the basement of the Edition, a vegetable-forward restaurant, Ardor, and an iconic rooftop bar, The Roof. It’s also worth noting that their 5-star spa, ranked by the Forbes Travel Guide, is known for its technology-forward treatments and ultra-luxury vibe. I went on a private tour of the EDITION during my most recent LA trip and I have to admit, I was blown away by the sheer luxury of it all. While I haven’t stayed at the EDITION (yet), it is at the top of my wish list.

I know why you’re really here – FOOD!

As New Yorkers, we are spoiled when it comes to food. We have neighborhoods broken down for every craving we could possibly desire. We are used to 24/7 delivery, $1 slices of pizza (which are more like $3 now, s/o inflation), and our supply of simple to boujee restaurants is endless. It’s tough to impress a New Yorker in the food department, but I have accepted the daunting task of trying to find spots in Los Angeles that even the pickiest of New Yorkers will love. Below, find my list of tried and true restaurants that had me saying, “Okay, LA, I see you!”

CASA MADERA

Oh, Casa Madera. Where do I begin?! This breathtakingly gorgeous restaurant transports you to a resort in Tulum or a 5-star restaurant in Ibiza. Casa Madera serves coastal Mexican cuisine with Mediterranean influences in a high-energy dining atmosphere. The design and views are out of this world and the food is just as delicious. While I would classify this restaurant as a “phone eats first” experience, you won’t be disappointed coming here as a picky New Yorker. My personal favorite items are the Guac and Chips, Burrata, Chicken Paillard and Parmesan Truffle Fries, but tbh, the whole menu slaps. I highly recommend booking a reservation in advance as this is one of the most popular restaurants in all of West Hollywood. Be sure to dress for a night out as the vibes here are stilettos, a sexy dress and a true beauty beat.

LAVO LOS ANGELES

I know what you’re thinking. LAVO? The same place that recently closed in NYC? Why would I go there!? Hear me out- the LAVO in Los Angeles is insanely beautiful with a delicious menu to match. It’s truly a place to see and be seen and it’s also a hot spot where New Yorkers can step out and show off the all black ensembles we love. My favorite items on the menu are the Penne Alla Vodka, the Black Truffle Pizza and the 20 Layer Peanut Butter Cake. I recommend a 9PM reservation because clubs open at 11PM and since you’ll be in the middle of all the fun spots, like New York institution, The Fleur Room, you’ll be set for the perfect dinner + night out.

NORMA WEHO

I went to Norma WeHo with a friend and client of mine who insisted we try this hotspot. Here’s looking at you – @freddie! She and I had drinks, an old fashioned for me and a glass of wine for her, split the Sourdough Flatbread with Whipped Ricotta and Caramelized Honey.  For our mains, we ordered the Parmesan Potatoes, Hot Fried ½ Chicken, and Braised Oztails. The vibes were immaculate, the photo opp in the main lobby gave main character energy, and the friendly staff made Norma jump on Julianne’s list of Top LA Picks. During the weekend, they have a DJ to set the vibes before you stumble out, making it the perfect spot for New Yorkers to try while they’re visiting the lesser-coast.

ELEPHANTE

I have been to Elephanté twice now. I will likely keep going back because the views, food and vibe of this restaurant can’t be matched. While Elephanté is located in Santa Monica, I would recommend a day trip there, just be sure to make this restaurant one of your stops. The first time I went, I ordered the Cacio e Pepe pizza and an Old Fashioned. The pizza was the perfect size to fill my growling stomach and the Old Fashioned was very tasty. I have also tried the Whipped Eggplant appetizer, Sopressata Pizza, regular Cacio e Pepe pasta and the Meatballs. After you finish your meal, I recommend you walk over to the Santa Monica pier to see the classic games, rides and enjoy being a typical tourist for a day.

IN-N-OUT

Would it truly be a Los Angeles guide without including In-N-Out? I think not! My personal favorite location is the one on Sunset Boulevard. I have spotted some celebs there and I love the chaotic vibes inside. Chaos makes me feel right at home (New Yorkers get it). The double-double burger with cheese fries is my go-to order and while it doesn’t match our East Coast competitor, Shake Shack IMO, it does hit just right in the California sunshine. The only downside of In-N-Out is that they don’t offer any delivery options with Uber Eats or DoorDash, so you have to brave the drive-thru line which often stretches out onto the street or go inside. But if you time it just right, you can truly be in and out.

Where Should I Get Drunk?

Visiting nightclubs is an essential part of exploring a new city. While New Yorkers are used to clubs closing at 4AM and an after party typically taking place behind a black-curtained dive bar, Los Angeles is different. The clubs are only open from 11PM-2AM and some of them are closed on Friday or Saturday. I have to admit, the nightclub scene is disappointing compared to our beloved New York. Venues are small, table service is a must, and most of them require knowing someone to get in the front door or paying an insane cover. But, if you’re a nightlife connoisseur like me, it’s still worth it to go out. Just expect the night to end early and be prepared to go to a house party in the hills afterwards, if you’re cool enough to get the invite. Nevertheless, find my list of top, worth-it clubs and bars below!

SKYBAR LOS ANGELES

Every time I’m in WeHo, I end up at Skybar at some point during my trip. Compared to the rest of the bars and clubs on the Sunset Strip, Skybar has amazing hours. They are open from 2PM-11PM on Sunday-Thursday, and 11AM-2AM Friday and Saturday. This open-air bar has a gorgeous pool with striking Los Angeles views, an ivy-covered pavilion giving cozy vibes year-around, and has tons of fun events lined up. They also are one of the few bars that carries my favorite drink, Jack Daniels, and the drinks are strong. All in all, Skybar is a must-see bar with fun day parties, gorgeous views and outstanding music.

BOOTSY BELLOWS

If you’re anything like me and prefer rap/hip-hop music, Bootsy Bellows by the infamous H.Wood Group is the place for you. Unlike most places in LA that play dreaded house music, on any given night you can hear Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Sexyy Red, and all the rap your heart desires. While the door can be tricky without knowing a promoter, I recommend getting there right when they open at 11PM for the easiest entry. Think of Bootsy Bellows as Pianos Lower East Side’s classier, less ratchet, more mature cousin. Bootsy’s is fun, high energy, and has incredible music and vibes to boot. When I’m in LA, I always make my way to Bootsy Bellows for a fun night shaking what my momma gave me.

THE HIGHLIGHT ROOM

The Highlight Room, AKA another New York Institution. The West Coast edition features a stunning rooftop pool, a restaurant, and killer vibes. Located in the heart of WeHo, The Highlight Room Los Angeles often has open-format DJs. Meaning you can hear anything from Taylor Swift to Drake. Peggy Gou to Morgan Wallen. The Highlight Room offers table service and has a dance floor in front of the DJ booth, making it perfect for a girls night out. The door tends to be easier than most places, and the bouncers are actually super nice. Last time I went, I rolled up in a black t-shirt I may or may not have slept in the night before, a black mini skirt, blazer, heels and my signature chain and the bouncer said he loved my “drip.” Hey, I’ll take it! I have been to The Highlight Room, give or take four times and I have never been disappointed. New Yorkers already know and love this iconic rooftop club, so why not check out the other coast?!

MAMA SHELTER

This rooftop bar offers delicious food (hint: try their Nashville Hot Chicken Bao, Guac and Chips and Boujee Fries), drinks, and great vibes. While they’re known for their poppin’ brunches and day parties, nighttime is just as fun. They have a DJ, dance floor, couches and their rooftop restaurant serves food until midnight on weekends. Mama Shelter is one of my favorite chill, pregame spots and is open from 11AM-2AM Friday and Saturday. The rooftop is casual, so expect patrons to be rocking denim and a t-shirt. Mama Shelter is located right next to popular country bar, Desert 5 Spot and across the street from TAO and The Highlight Room. Check out Mama Shelter for the perfect brunch and pregame spot!

If you’ve made it this far, I love you. But for real, New Yorkers need a guide of tried and true places when visiting the City of Angels. Trust me, I get it. I hope you feel prepared, have saved this article in your LA Notes page, and are going to check out all the spots I recommended! Cheers, Loop Lovers!
